Water treatment operators run the processes that turn raw source water into water safe to drink, then keep it moving through the distribution network at the right pressure and residual. The job mixes chemistry, pumps and valves, sampling, and a great deal of record-keeping for the public health regulator. Plants run continuously, so shift and on-call coverage is normal.

What the work involves
Adjust coagulant, disinfectant, and pH chemical dosing in response to raw water quality.
Collect samples and run bench tests for turbidity, residual disinfectant, and pH.
Monitor filters, clarifiers, and pumps, and backwash or switch units as performance changes.
Operate valves and pumps to hold reservoir levels and network pressure within targets.
Complete regulatory sampling records, exceedance reports, and shift logs.
Carry out routine maintenance and calibration on dosing equipment and online analysers.
