Drilling rig operator
Drilling rig operators control the drawworks, rotary system, and mud pumps that advance a well, and direct the crew working on the rig floor. Reading what the drill string is doing through weight, torque, and pressure indications is a large part of the skill. The work is physical, noisy, done on rotational shifts, and usually away from home.

Operate drawworks, top drive or rotary table, and pumps to control weight on bit and rate of penetration.
Monitor pit levels, standpipe pressure, and returns for signs of losses or an influx.
Direct the floor crew through connections, tripping pipe, and running casing.
Inspect and maintain drill string components, blowout preventers, and rig equipment.
Run well control drills and follow shut-in procedures when indicators call for them.
