What this section is for
Puzzles are a low-friction way into reasoning practice. You do not have to sit a full aptitude suite or work a hundred-item cognitive bank to get something out of an afternoon here — you can open one category, work three puzzles, and leave with a named technique you did not have before.
The method is the product. Every puzzle shows its explanation as soon as you check an answer, and every explanation does the same three things: it names the technique, walks the one move that collapses the problem, and tells you how to spot the same shape next time. Reading the explanation when you were right is where most of the learning is — being right by luck and being right by method look identical from the outside.
Nothing here is timed and nothing is scored server-side. Your answers are checked on this device, and the only figure any page will show you is a raw count of what you solved in that sitting.
What this section is not
This is not an IQ test, not a cognitive assessment, and not a diagnostic instrument. Solving puzzles here produces no score of record, no percentile, and no band that could be read as an ability estimate — deliberately, because a self-administered, untimed, unproctored puzzle set cannot support one honestly. Nothing here can be used for Mensa qualification, giftedness identification, educational placement, employment selection, or any accommodation or medical decision.
Puzzle items are also never reused as unseen scored questions in any Novus Learn assessment, so reading an explanation here can never advantage or disadvantage you elsewhere on the site.
How the ladder works
Every category publishes the same 25-puzzle ramp, so a difficulty 3 in one category means roughly what a difficulty 3 means in another, and the same rung number is comparable across all 8:
Difficulty 1 (5 puzzles) — one rule, one step, nothing to write down.
Difficulty 2 (6 puzzles) — one rule with a twist, or two steps of the same rule.
Difficulty 3 (6 puzzles) — two interacting rules, or one rule plus a convincing distractor. Most people start taking notes here.
Difficulty 4 (5 puzzles) — several constraints that must be combined in a particular order.
Difficulty 5 (3 puzzles) — needs a named technique: contradiction, exhaustive case split, or working backwards. Only three per category, on purpose.
Working straight through a category takes about 435 minutes across all 8 categories, but that is a guide, never a limit.
Constraint puzzles solved by ticking and crossing a grid. Each one gives you a small cast, a set of attributes, and clues that never state the whole answer — so you close the board by elimination, negative inference, and, at the top of the ladder, a hypothesis you deliberately break.
Twenty-five original runs of numbers, each with one term blanked out, from a single repeated step up to two rules interleaved. The method is the point: difference tables, ratio checks, splitting a run by position, and the discipline to test a rule against every printed term before trusting it.

Anagrams, letter series, analogies and odd-one-out items built on ordinary English words. Every puzzle is solved by working on the letters themselves and on the relations between words rather than by recalling facts, and every explanation names the technique it used.

Situations that look impossible until you notice the assumption you brought to them. Every scenario is fully stated: the resolution follows from the listed facts plus everyday knowledge, never from a hidden trick, and every explanation names the assumption that was doing the damage.
