Refinery process operator
Refinery process operators run distillation, cracking, treating, and utility units, splitting their time between a control room panel and outside rounds on the unit. They control temperatures, pressures, and flows to keep product on specification while staying inside safe operating limits. Start-ups, shutdowns, and upsets are the demanding parts of the job and are worked strictly to procedure.

What the work involves
- Control unit variables from the distributed control system to hold product quality and throughput.
- Walk the unit checking pumps, exchangers, furnaces, and relief systems for abnormal conditions.
- Take samples for the laboratory and adjust operation based on the results returned.
- Prepare equipment for maintenance by draining, purging, isolating, and issuing permits.
- Execute start-up and shutdown procedures and respond to trips and process upsets.
- Record operating data, deviations, and handover notes for the incoming shift.
