Crane operator

Crane operators lift and place loads on construction sites and in yards and ports, working to lift plans, load charts, and signals from riggers on the ground. The job needs precise control, constant awareness of wind, ground conditions, and people below, and strict discipline about capacity limits. Operators are usually certified and their certification is checked on site.

What the work involves

  1. Carry out pre-operation inspections of the crane, ropes, hooks, and safety devices.

  2. Confirm the lift plan, load weight, radius, and configuration against the load chart before lifting.

  3. Set up outriggers, mats, and counterweights and confirm ground bearing is adequate.

  4. Operate the crane to hoist, slew, and place loads following signals or radio from the rigger.

  5. Monitor wind speed, swing, obstructions, and exclusion zones and stop the lift when conditions change.

  6. Record inspections, faults, and operating hours and report defects for maintenance.
