Civil engineering technologist

Civil engineering technologists support the design, testing, and construction of infrastructure such as roads, water systems, bridges, and site works. They run calculations and drawings under an engineer's direction, carry out materials testing, and inspect work on site against the specification. The role sits between the design office and the construction site.

What the work involves

  1. Prepare design drawings, layouts, and details for roads, drainage, earthworks, or structures in CAD.

  2. Run routine design calculations and quantity take-offs under an engineer's supervision.

  3. Sample and test soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt and record the results.

  4. Inspect construction work against the specification and report non-conforming work.

  5. Collect site data such as levels, cross-sections, and as-built dimensions.

  6. Compile inspection, test, and progress records for the project file.
