Refrigeration mechanic
Refrigeration mechanics build and service the cooling systems used by supermarkets, cold stores, food processors, ice rinks, and process plants. The work is more system-oriented than domestic HVAC: racks, condensers, evaporators, and controls have to be balanced against a load, and refrigerant handling is regulated. Failures are urgent because stock and process material are at risk.

- Install and pipe compressor racks, condensers, evaporators, and refrigerant lines.
- Evacuate, charge, and leak-test systems and handle refrigerant recovery under the applicable rules.
- Set and adjust superheat, subcooling, pressure controls, and defrost schedules.
- Diagnose loss of capacity, icing, oil return problems, and compressor failures.
- Service controls and monitoring systems and respond to temperature alarms.
- Record refrigerant handled, work performed, and system readings for the compliance file.
