Automotive service technicians diagnose, service, and repair cars and light trucks across engine, driveline, brake, suspension, electrical, and electronic systems. Modern vehicles are heavily networked, so scan tools, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer procedures matter as much as hand tools. Explaining a diagnosis clearly to a customer or service advisor is part of the job.

- Interview the customer or read the work order to reproduce and define the reported symptom.
- Scan control modules, read fault codes and live data, and follow the manufacturer's diagnostic tree.
- Test circuits, sensors, actuators, and mechanical systems to isolate the actual cause.
- Carry out repairs and replacements: brakes, suspension, driveline, engine, and electrical components.
- Perform scheduled maintenance, inspections, and safety checks and document what was found.
- Road-test after repair, clear codes, and confirm the original complaint is resolved.
