Carpenter
Carpenters lay out, cut, and assemble the timber and engineered wood elements of a building, from framing and formwork through to stairs, doors, and trim. The trade spans rough work where speed and structural accuracy matter and finish work where appearance and tight fit matter. Most carpenters also spend time setting out from drawings and correcting for a site that is not perfectly square or level.

What the work involves
- Set out walls, floors, and openings from drawings and site references, checking level, plumb, and square.
- Cut and assemble framing, sheathing, joists, rafters, and structural connections.
- Build and strip formwork and temporary works for concrete pours.
- Hang doors and windows and fit stairs, cabinets, mouldings, and trim.
- Select and maintain hand and power tools and keep the work area safe for other trades.
- Check completed work against the drawings and correct out-of-tolerance sections.
