Millwright
Millwrights install, align, maintain, and rebuild industrial machinery: pumps, gearboxes, conveyors, turbines, presses, and the drives that connect them. Precision alignment and bearing work are core to the trade, because a shaft that is out by a small amount will destroy couplings and seals over time. Much of the work happens during shutdowns or in response to a breakdown.

What the work involves
- Set, level, and grout machine bases and align shafts and couplings using dial indicators or laser tools.
- Strip, inspect, and rebuild pumps, gearboxes, and drive assemblies, replacing bearings and seals.
- Diagnose vibration, noise, overheating, and leakage on running equipment.
- Install and tension belts, chains, and conveyor components and adjust tracking.
- Fabricate, fit, and modify guards, brackets, and mechanical components as needed.
- Follow lockout, isolation, and confined-space procedures and log work in the maintenance system.
