Electrician
Electricians install, alter, test, and repair the wiring, panels, and fixed equipment that carry electrical power through buildings and sites. Much of the day is reading drawings, running and terminating cable, and proving a circuit is safe before it is energised. Fault-finding on systems that are already live is a routine part of the work and carries genuine safety consequences.

What the work involves
- Read electrical drawings and single-line diagrams to set out circuits, devices, and panel positions.
- Install conduit, cable tray, boxes, and wiring, then terminate conductors at panels, switches, and outlets.
- Test continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, and earthing before energising a circuit.
- Diagnose tripping protective devices, dead circuits, and equipment faults using meters and testers.
- Apply isolation and lockout procedures before working on or near energised equipment.
- Record test results and completed work so the installation can be inspected and handed over.
