Veterinary technician
Veterinary technicians provide the clinical nursing, anaesthesia, laboratory, and imaging support that a veterinary practice runs on. They monitor patients under anaesthetic, place catheters, run diagnostics, and coach owners through aftercare. The role is physically demanding, emotionally heavy at times, and in many places carries a protected title and a registration requirement.

What the work involves
- Admit patients, take histories and vital signs, and prepare them for procedures.
- Induce and monitor anaesthesia and assist in surgery as the sterile or circulating assistant.
- Run in-house laboratory tests and take and process radiographs or other imaging.
- Place catheters, administer medications to the veterinarian's direction, and manage fluid therapy.
- Provide nursing care, pain monitoring, and wound management for hospitalised animals.
- Explain discharge instructions, medication schedules, and preventive care to owners.
