Systems engineer
Systems engineers hold the whole of a complex product together: requirements, interfaces, architecture, and the evidence that the finished system does what it was meant to do. The role is coordination-heavy and depends on being able to reason across mechanical, electrical, and software boundaries.

What the work involves
- Elicit and write requirements, then trace them to design decisions and test evidence.
- Define system architecture and control the interfaces between sub-systems.
- Run trade studies comparing candidate solutions against cost, risk, and performance criteria.
- Plan integration and acceptance testing and adjudicate anomalies found during it.
- Chair or contribute to design reviews and record the actions and rationale.
- Maintain the risk register and configuration baseline as the design changes.

- An accredited bachelor's degree in engineering, followed by a move into a systems role.
- A postgraduate systems engineering qualification taken while working in a technical discipline.
- Progression from a design, test, or integration engineering role within the same organisation.
