- Take an ocular and general health history and check visual acuity.
- Perform refraction and binocular vision testing to determine a prescription.
- Examine anterior and posterior eye structures, including retinal imaging and pressure checks.
- Detect and monitor conditions such as glaucoma, cataract, and diabetic retinal change.
- Prescribe spectacles or contact lenses and fit and review contact-lens wearers.
- Refer to ophthalmology or to the patient's physician when findings need medical management.
