Mental health support workers help people living with mental illness manage everyday life, in supported housing, inpatient units, or the community. They are not therapists: the role is practical support, structure, observation, and being a steady presence when someone is unwell. Shift work, restraint and de-escalation training, and exposure to distressing situations come with the job.

- Support clients with routines, medication reminders, appointments, and daily tasks
- Observe mood, behaviour, and risk indicators and record them in the client record
- De-escalate distress and follow crisis, safety, and restraint protocols when needed
- Encourage participation in recovery goals, groups, and community activities
- Report changes and concerns to nurses, clinicians, or the case manager
- Complete shift handovers, incident reports, and required documentation
