Medical laboratory technologist
Medical laboratory technologists run and validate the tests that clinicians rely on to diagnose and monitor disease. The work spans haematology, chemistry, microbiology, transfusion, and histology, and it is as much about quality control and instrument troubleshooting as about running samples. Patients are rarely seen, but the consequences of an unreliable result are direct.

What the work involves
- Prepare and process patient specimens and check them against acceptance criteria.
- Operate and maintain analysers, and troubleshoot instrument flags and failures.
- Run quality control and calibration and act when results drift out of range.
- Examine slides, cultures, and other preparations and interpret findings within scope.
- Validate and release results, escalating critical values to the clinical team immediately.
- Document procedures, deviations, and corrective actions for the laboratory record.
