Industrial engineers study how people, equipment, materials, and information move through an operation, then redesign the flow to remove waste and bottlenecks. The role is analytical but also social, because most improvements only stick if the people doing the work help design them.

What the work involves
- Map current-state processes, take cycle-time observations, and identify constraints.
- Model layouts, staffing patterns, and line balancing options and compare the trade-offs.
- Analyse operational data to locate scrap, rework, downtime, or handling waste.
- Run improvement workshops with operators, supervisors, and maintenance staff.
- Design workstations, material presentation, and standard work with ergonomics in mind.
- Track whether implemented changes held, and adjust the standard when they did not.

- An accredited bachelor's degree in industrial, systems, or manufacturing engineering.
- A degree in another engineering branch combined with continuous-improvement or quality certification.
- An engineering technology diploma followed by a bridging route into the engineering stream.
- Internal movement from a production, planning, or quality role into an improvement engineering post.
