Two occupations share one search phrase

Search Console shows people arriving with “reliability engineer” and close variants such as “maintenance reliability engineer”. On this site that phrase is not one job. It is two published occupation profiles in different career families, with different day-to-day work, different entry routes, and different practice suites behind them. Treating them as one title would be the thin-content move this landing exists to avoid.

Industrial reliability engineers work out why plant and equipment fail and change design, maintenance strategy, or operating practice so it fails less. The work is failure histories, condition monitoring, root-cause investigation, and honest tracking of whether an intervention actually helped. Site reliability engineers keep production software running and treat reliability as an engineering problem: service level objectives, automation of toil, incident response, and blameless reviews. On-call is normal. Both roles are investigative. They do not share a workshop.

What the industrial profile already lists

The reliability engineer page is the canonical occupation record: day-to-day duties, entry routes, work context, interest tags, and official source links. The site reliability engineer page sits in information technology. Aliases include SRE, reliability engineer, and production engineer — which is why a web search for the industrial title also surfaces this record. Its constructs are problem solving, technical reasoning, multitasking and monitoring, situational judgement, and critical thinking. Related suites are DevOps and platform operations, cloud operations, and technical troubleshooting.

If your search was really about production software, start here rather than on the plant-reliability page. The matcher will not decide that for you: it ranks twenty career families from a questionnaire, then you read the occupation. Family-level matching is deliberately coarser than a job title.
