Occupation

Geophysicist

Geophysicists use physical measurements (seismic, magnetic, gravity, electrical) to work out what lies beneath the surface without digging it up. The work is strongly quantitative: acquiring survey data, processing it through signal-processing chains, and interpreting the result alongside geological evidence. Applications range from resource exploration and engineering site investigation to earthquake and hazard monitoring.

A visual day in the work

What the work involves

  1. Plan survey layouts and specify acquisition parameters for the target being imaged

  2. Supervise or carry out field data acquisition with geophysical instruments

  3. Process raw signals to suppress noise and correct for acquisition effects

  4. Build and test subsurface models and assess how well the data constrain them

  5. Integrate geophysical interpretation with geological and borehole information

  6. Report uncertainty honestly alongside the preferred interpretation

Entry-route stepper

How people commonly enter

  1. A degree in geophysics, physics, earth sciences, or a mathematical discipline

  2. Postgraduate study for specialist processing, imaging, or seismology roles

  3. Technician or field-crew work as an entry point, with qualifications added later

  4. Graduate entry with resource companies, geophysical contractors, or national survey bodies

Typical training: Bachelor's degree
