Fleet dispatcher

Fleet dispatchers assign loads and routes to drivers and keep a moving fleet coordinated through the day. They handle breakdowns, delays, weather, and hours-of-service limits in real time, usually while several drivers and customers are calling at once. The role is deskbound but rarely calm.

  1. Assign loads to drivers against hours-of-service, licence class, and equipment constraints.

  2. Brief drivers on routes, appointment times, and site access requirements.

  3. Monitor vehicle positions and re-plan when a delivery, breakdown, or road closure disrupts the day.

  4. Coordinate roadside assistance, replacement vehicles, and recovery of stranded loads.

  5. Keep customers and account managers informed of arrival changes.

  6. Log trips, delays, and incidents and hand over open issues at shift change.
