- Check apparatus, hose, breathing apparatus, and medical kit at shift start
- Respond to alarms and carry out search, rescue, and fire attack as assigned
- Provide first aid or pre-hospital care until an ambulance crew arrives
- Ventilate, overhaul, and make a scene safe before returning to quarters
- Train on ladders, ropes, extrication, and live-fire scenarios
- Take part in building inspections and community fire-safety visits
