Puzzles Where the Explanation Is the Product
Nothing here is timed, ranked or scored against anybody. Every puzzle ships with a worked method, because a puzzle solved by luck and one solved by method look identical on a score sheet.

The thing a puzzle score cannot tell you
Copy linkTwo people solve the same sequence puzzle. One spotted the rule; the other tried the three obvious continuations and one of them fitted. On any score sheet they are identical, and the difference between them is the entire value of the exercise.
That is why nothing in this section is timed or ranked, and why every puzzle carries a worked explanation of how to get there rather than only the answer. The explanation is not the consolation prize for failing; it is the part you were meant to take away.
How the catalogue is organised
Copy linkPuzzles are grouped into categories, and each category page carries its own puzzles rather than sending you to a separate page per puzzle. The categories are logic grids, number sequences, spatial and visual, word and letter, code and cipher, deduction, lateral thinking, and maths.
Every puzzle sits on a published one-to-five difficulty ladder, so you can choose a level rather than discovering one. That sounds minor and is not: an unfamiliar category at level four teaches you that you are bad at it, while the same category at level two teaches you the notation.
Keeping the puzzles on their category page rather than one per URL is also deliberate. A set is a better unit of practice than a puzzle, because the second and third puzzle of a type are where the method starts to feel like a method rather than a trick you were told. Scattering them across separate pages optimises for a page count and against that experience.
How to get the value out of a set
Copy link- Pick the category you are worst at, not the one you enjoy, at least some of the time.
- Start one level below where you think you are.
- Read the explanation even when you were right, to find out whether you were right for the right reason.
- Stop when you stop reading the explanations, because that is the point at which the practice has become entertainment.
Where the puzzles come from
Copy linkEvery puzzle is original Novus content, written by hand for its category. None of it is collected from puzzle books, scraped from other sites, or recalled from any assessment. That matters for a reason beyond copyright: a puzzle written to teach a method can be built so the method is the shortest route to the answer, and a puzzle collected from elsewhere usually cannot.
The link to the serious practice
Copy linkPuzzle categories are mapped to the same skill constructs the aptitude catalogue uses. So a category you enjoy is a light route into a skill you are about to study properly, and the skill lesson behind it is considerably more systematic than the puzzles are: what the skill actually is, worked examples, the pitfalls that cost people marks, practice tips and a glossary.
Used that way the puzzles are a warm-up with a purpose. Used on their own they are a pleasant evening, which is also a legitimate thing to do with them.
The mapping runs in both directions, which is the useful part. If a skill lesson is not going in, its puzzle category is a lower-stakes way to meet the same reasoning without a suite attached, and coming back to the lesson afterwards is noticeably easier. Difficulty that feels like a wall in an exam context often turns out to be a vocabulary problem that a few puzzles dissolve.
What a worked explanation should contain
Copy linkThere is a difference between an explanation and a justification. A justification tells you why the answer is correct once you already have it, which is satisfying and teaches nothing. An explanation tells you what to notice first, which reduces the space of possibilities, and how you would have found it without knowing the answer.
That distinction is the editorial standard behind this section, and it is why the explanations are longer than they strictly need to be. A number-sequence explanation that says the differences are the squares is a justification. One that says start by writing the first differences, because that resolves most sequences immediately and costs ten seconds when it does not, is a method you can use on a different puzzle tomorrow.
What is stored, and where
Copy linkYour progress through a category is kept in this browser and nowhere else. There is no leaderboard, no streak that follows you between devices, and no score attached to your name, because there is no name. Clearing site data removes it, and that is the whole of the data story.
The absence of a streak is deliberate rather than an omission. A streak is a retention mechanic, and a retention mechanic on a study tool optimises for turning up rather than for learning anything, which are different things and only one of them is what you came for.
