No, the Reasoning Challenge Is Not an IQ Test

Your Novus Reasoning Score is how many items you answered correctly on one form, expressed as a percentage. That is the entire definition. It is not scaled, not adjusted for difficulty against a population, and not converted into anything else.

Everything else on this page follows from that one sentence. A raw percentage on an original question set is a perfectly honest thing to report, and it is nothing like an IQ.

A real IQ test is standardised against a representative norm sample, with published reliability and validity evidence and a defined administration procedure. The norm sample is what lets a raw score become a percentile: without it, saying somebody scored in the top ten per cent is a statement about nothing.

The Reasoning Challenge has none of that, which is why the refusal to print an IQ number is deliberate rather than a feature that has not been built yet. Any website that hands you an IQ figure after twelve minutes has invented it, and the arithmetic that produced it is not a secret worth having.

• Mensa qualification or any other membership requirement.
• Diagnosis, or identification of giftedness or a learning difference.
• Educational placement or streaming.
• Employment selection, screening or promotion.
• Disability applications or workplace accommodations.
• Legal matters or medical decisions.

Every question is written by hand for its form. Nothing is taken from a real assessment, a leaked bank, a licensed set or recalled material. That is partly an ethical position and partly a practical one: a question set assembled from elsewhere cannot be described accurately, because nobody knows what the pieces were designed to measure.

It also means a retake of the same form partly measures your memory of its questions. Each family has parallel forms built to the same blueprint with entirely different questions, which is what makes an honest second attempt possible.

Writing items by hand has a cost that is worth naming, because it explains the shape of the product. Original items are slow to produce and they are the reason there are nine forms rather than ninety. A larger bank assembled from collected material would look more generous and would be less describable: nobody could say what it measures, and the disclaimers on this page would become guesses about somebody else's design.

The Career Matcher strips reasoning-score inputs at the engine level. A puzzle result cannot move a career suggestion in any direction, and that is enforced in the code rather than left as an intention.

The reason is worth stating. Wiring the two together would imply that performance on a reasoning form is evidence about which work suits you, and it is not. It would also quietly turn an entertainment product into something that shapes decisions about somebody's life.

A number presented as a measure of intelligence does unusual things to people. It gets remembered precisely, repeated years later, and used to explain things it cannot explain, in both directions: as permission to stop trying and as evidence of something that was never tested. That happens with real instruments administered by professionals, and it happens far more with a figure produced by a web page in twelve minutes.

Which is why the disclaimers here are in the same sentence as the score rather than in a policy page nobody opens. A caveat placed where somebody has already stopped reading is a caveat written for the publisher's benefit rather than the reader's, and the distinction is the whole difference between disclosure and compliance.

Finding out whether you enjoy this kind of reasoning. Getting familiar with question formats before an assessment where the format itself would otherwise cost you time. Noticing which of the four domains you are slowest in, and doing something about it.

Those are real uses and they do not require the score to mean more than it does. The FAQ answers the rest of the direct questions, including the ones people are slightly embarrassed to ask.

There is one use that is better than any of them and gets overlooked: working out which question types you find genuinely interesting. That is a preference rather than an ability, it is stable, and it is considerably more informative about what you might enjoy doing than any score on this site could be.
